TOWN OF SORICO Sorico is an ancient fishing village on the northwest shore of Lake Como. Its territory extends round the river Mera, which connects Lake Mezzola and the Pian di Spagna. Since ancient times, thanks to its strategic position, it has been a place of passage and commercial exchange. Together with Dongo and Gravedona, it made up the County of the Trepievi, the three Superior Parishes of Lake Como. During the 10 years war between Como and Milan Sorico sided with the second. The Pian di Spagna is a vast area at the entrance of Valtellina and the valley of the Mera. During the last century, malaria and floods plagued the area. It is called “Valley of Spain” because during the 17th and 18th centuries Spanish camps were built, like the Forte of Fuentes, a defensive structure erected by Catholics in 1603 on the only high ground on the Plain. From here, the Spanish were able to check the territory and the lowland of Valtellina and the Val Chiavenna. In 1858, the territory was reclaimed from the Austrians and the course of the river Adda was changed by constructing around 4 kilometres of artificial watercourse. The flow of the Adda was then directed into Lake Como. The whole area of the riverbed was reclaimed. This marshy area, the natural reserve, is today, only one of the few marshes of international importance in an alpine country. It is the ideal environment for many types of permanent and migratory birds and is an ideal habitat for the native deer population. It is possible to see the 400-year-old mighty bell tower of the Church of Saint Stephen. The bell tower was originally one of the three military towers used for the collection of tolls for the passage from one region to another. Part of the apses and the marble entrance where signs of the fifteenth-century challenges are still visible. The Church of St. Miro, was a small church of the first Roman period originally known as the church of St. Michael. Subsequently it was devoted to St Miro who, according to the legend, after crossing the lake landed on the shores around Sorico from the mountains of Canzo, where he lived as a hermit. He was a powerful figure: wherever he went he miraculously brought rain to areas stricken by droughts. The little pond of Novate Mezzola to the north of Lake Como is part of the Adda delta. Its name comes from “dimidiatus”, that means “halved lake.” It is an area of water that is slowly reducing in size. It is now less than 50 meters deep and will eventually dry out completely leaving a simple riverbed that will wind through the plain. This little pond is declared protected area and shelter for migratory birds from the Region of Lombardy.
