TOWN OF DONGO
Dongo is a small village of the North West part of Lake Como, situated at 4,5km away from Gravedona and 12km from Menaggio. Its territory exstends from Sasso di Musso towards the river Albano and carries on up to the hamlet of Bersaglio.
The old town centre facing the bay and extending up to the hamlets of Martinico e Barbignano has witnessed many important historic events. In particular Dongo is remembered as being the background to important events at the end of the fascist period. It was here that on 28th April 1945 fascist party officials who had been trying to escape into Switzerland with Mussolini were shot by the partisans after having been captured the day before between Musso and Dongo.
The northern part of Lake Como is ideal to practise windsurf, to sail and for other water sports, thanks to the weather that is mild in winter and even milder in summer and thanks to the lake's breezes called "Breva".
Dongo also offers a nice 3km lake front footpath that links the village to Gravedona.
There are many excursions you can take from here: from San Iorio pass you can get to the top of Marmorana mountain (2316m), from where you can enjoy a wonderful panorama on Valtellina.
Among the buildings stands out the neoclassic Manzi which today serves as the Town Hall, site of the Resistance Museum, designed by the architect Pietro Gilardoni (1824), a student of Pollak. Inside it has beautiful frescoes from thc Appiani School. It is open during working hours. Close to the bridge over the Albano there is the fifteenth century Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime; which is deemed to be miraculous. Following on to the left of the Town hall, is the Romanesque church of St. Mary of Mārtinico, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, inside is a nave closed by a semicircular apse, among the sacred furnishings, and a silver-gilt processional cross by F. Ser Gregori. Uphill from the church, a 30-minute walk through the village of Barbignano, leads to the Santuario di S. Gottardo patron saint of Dongo, inside of which is a piece by Gian Giacomo Barbelli.
