Varenna, Comomeer Varenna, aan de oever van het Leccomeer, tussen Mandello en Bellano, kijkt uit over het meer in het punt waar de drie takken van het Lario bijeen komen, en dankzij deze positie beschikt het dorp over zeer goede verbindingen met de belangrijkste plaatsen op alle andere oevers. Varenna is gebouwd op een voorgebergte bij de monding van de bergrivier Esino en zou kunnen stammen van nederzettingen die zover teruggaan als het ijzertijdperk. Varenna is een erg fascinerend dorp en ook al is het tegenwoordig een belangrijk toeristen- en congrescentrum, is het zijn verleden, verbonden met de visserij, de constructie van tonnen en het winnen van zwart marmer, niet vergeten.

Casa Francesca is situated in the municipality of Varenna, that lies exactly halfway down the eastern shore of the lake on the Lecco branch on the slopes of a picturesque promontory overlooking the lake. The house is built on two levels in a quiet area of Perledo, at only 5 minutes from Varenna. It is one of the most picturesque towns on the lake, with its steep winding alleys lined with charming homes, flowering balconies, cobblestone pathways that descend to the beautiful lake front promenade make Varenna a real pearl of the lake. The mild climate and picturesque surroundings guarantee a relaxing and peaceful stay for all tastes and is also a beautiful starting point for excursions to the entire lake. Here are also two famous villas that are certainly worth a visit: Villa Cipressi boasts a large botanical garden while the gardens of Villa Monastero offer many exotic species, temples, statues and stunning views of the whole lake. Varenna’s hamlets such as Perledo, Vezio and Esino Lario are also nice places to visit before setting out trips to the mountain Grigne. The most interesting one is Vezio with its’ well kept fortress from where you can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the whole lake. The apartment is only a 3 minute drive from the town centre in Varenna but is also a good hike and results in magnificent views over the Lake. In the town centre you can find some shops, cafés and restaurants. There are free beaches and a Lido with sun beds, changing rooms, café and playground close to the ferry dock, from where ferries for Bellagio and Menaggio depart regularly. The railway station is a few minutes from the town centre where trains run almost every hour in direction Valtellina one way and Lecco and Milan in the opposite direction. The local ski resort is only 15 minutes away by car too for use in the winter months. There is ample access to all the famous Italian and Swiss ski resorts too, all being around an hour away from the apartment.
